The City of Bakersfield, the ninth largest city in California, is looking for a strategic leader in the waste management arena to assist in directing a well-managed, innovative operation that is widely recognized for leadership in organics recycling. The City of Bakersfield’s Solid Waste Division includes the largest public sector compost facility in California, a tenant operated material recycling facility (MRF) at the compost facility, a refuse and recycling collection program that is a unique combination of 50% private and 50% municipal forces, and a model anti-litter job training program partnership with the Bakersfield Homeless Center.

A new report from the National Association of Realtors rates Bakersfield in their top ten cities to live in for millennials, due to the relatively low cost of housing, minimal traffic, job growth and strong economic outlook. Bakersfield offers a vast array of restaurants and breweries, music festivals, hiking trails, lakes, museums, and a downtown art walk — exactly what you'd expect to find in a major up-and-coming city.

The ideal candidate is a seasoned leader with experience in the management of municipal solid waste operations, who can see the big picture and manage all inter-related pieces of complex solid waste services and programs in an integrated manner.

To be considered, please submit a detailed resume, cover letter, and a list of six work-related references (who will not be contacted until the late stages of the recruitment and will be coordinated with the successful candidate). Your resume should indicate the size of staff and budgets you have managed and also reflect both years and months with regard to the employment dates for current and prior positions held. Please submit your materials through our website:
